He began playing guitar at the age of 12, and by the time he was 15, he was playing professionally. He moved to Austin, Texas in the early 1970s and began playing with various blues and rock bands. In 1978, Shannon and Layton formed Double Trouble, and the band quickly gained a following in the Austin music scene. They released their debut album, Texas Flood, in 1983, and it was a critical and commercial success. The band went on to release several more albums, and Shannon continued to tour and record with them until their disbandment in 1989. Shannon has also performed with a variety of other artists, including Eric Clapton, John Mayer, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
