Mickey Guyton Will Be Hosting The Academy of Country Music Awards First Black Woman To Do So

After last year’s reawakening of the Black Lives Matter Movement, Mickey Guyton made her voice known even more about the mistreatment that people of color receive in the country music industry. Now, she has been tapped to host the Academy of Country Music Awards alongside Keith Urban — and she is the first Black woman to do so.

The singer took to her Instagram to share a heartwarming video and let her followers know about the huge new opportunity.

After rising to the top of the charts with her raw and emotional song Black Like Me, the industry was forced to take a hard look of their outdated practices that fostered an environment where people feel comfortable enough to be racist.

It’s been way too long but it finally seems like changes are happening. This means not just inviting POC artists to perform at shows but also making them hosts, headliners, and main events instead of features.

What is my life right now?! Thank you @KeithUrban and I cannot wait to join you as co-host of the @ACMawards on April 18th. 🤍 pic.twitter.com/UZcEuuxoZw

Mickey talked about what an honor it was.

‘Last year I had the opportunity to perform at the Academy of Country Music Awards with someone I long admired, Keith Urban, and this year I am incredibly excited to share hosting duties with him. As I’ve said before, ‘If you can see it, you can be it,’ and it’s such an honor to step onto the ACM stage as the first-ever Black woman to host the show. Over the years, the Academy of Country Music has always been a home for me through opportunities both onstage and throughout their work on diversity and inclusion. This is a moment of great significance for me and I am so thrilled to share it with all the fans.’

This comes after she’s been open about the amount of hate she receives for being a Black woman in the country genre everyday.
